Program Statement

The post-graduate year-one (PGY-1) pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for post-graduate year-two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training.

The PGY-1 residency program at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills provides a wide range of clinical experiences, with a focus on inpatient acute care in a community hospital setting. This program is designed to develop a strong, competent clinician and educator who can practice independently in a hospital setting. Rotations with a clinical focus are offered for the resident to gain knowledge of and expertise in pharmacotherapy, various disease states, and patient populations.

About the Residency Program

The program is affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin – College of Pharmacy (UTCOP). The UTCOP Teaching and Leadership Fellows Program (TLFP) is a learning experience provided to residents participating in pharmacy residency programs affiliated with UTCOP. The program provides the opportunity for pharmacy residents to gain fundamental knowledge and skills in teaching, learning, and leadership. The skills obtained can be utilized when providing medication and practice-related education to patients, caregivers, health care professionals, students, and the public (individuals and groups) in an experiential or didactic role. Residents will be required to document growth in teaching skills as well as leadership development throughout the program. The resident will receive a certificate at the completion of the program.

Program Information

Application Process 

In order to be considered for an interview, an applicant must have:

  • Graduated, or will graduate, from an ACPE accredited pharmacy school
  • A Texas pharmacy license or be eligible to obtain a Texas pharmacy license by September 30th of the residency year
  • Participate in the ASHP Resident Matching Program

Learning Experiences 

The resident will complete seven required rotations and three elective rotations. The length of the rotations varies from four to six weeks. Pharmacy staffing and a clinical research project will occur longitudinally throughout the resident’s PGY1 year. Additionally, the month of December will be reserved for research.

  • Staffing (one evening every week, one weekend every three weeks)
