Frequently Asked Questions About Nurse Midwives

What is a nurse midwife?

There are two kinds of midwives. Professional or lay midwives deliver at home and in birthing centers. They are trained in childbirth and receive a license after passing an exam. They are not required to have medical training and cannot administer any medication.

At CHRISTUS Children's, our team of nurse midwives are registered nurses who receive extensive training and education to become certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board.

To give you expert support throughout your pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum period, our team works closely with a board-certified OBGYN. Our nurse midwives also offer gynecologic care.

What are the benefits of choosing a nurse midwife to deliver my baby at CHRISTUS Children's?

Our certified nurse midwives focus on taking care of you and your baby, whether this is your first baby or your fifth. Our goal is to build a trusting relationship with you and your family. Nurse midwives will advocate on your behalf while minimizing medical interventions whenever possible.

Research shows that women who receive care from a certified nurse midwife have shorter hospital stays plus a decreased risk of premature birth and Cesarean delivery. In addition, there’s a decreased chance of labor induction and occurrence of serious perineal tears.

By delivering at CHRISTUS Children’s, you will also have access to the highest level of care provided in our level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

Can I have an epidural for pain relief if I use a midwife?
Absolutely. While we are experienced in natural childbirth deliveries, we believe a patient should have pain medication if that is their desire. Even if it’s not part of your original birth plan, we respect your decision to receive pain medicine if you change your mind.
Do nurse midwives deliver babies at home?

Across the U.S., nurse midwives perform 95% of their deliveries in a hospital. Our certified nurse midwives deliver babies at CHRISTUS Children’s.

If you are considering a home delivery, we urge you to find a nurse midwife who is certified to practice in the state of Texas, or in your state of residence. Ask the midwife about the physician she will call and what hospital you would be taken to if any complications arise.

What other services do certified nurse midwives provide?

In addition to pregnancy care, our nurse midwives offer gynecologic care for women throughout their lifespan from the unique needs of adolescents through managing menopause and beyond.

We are now accepting new patients. Schedule an appointment by calling 210-704-4840.
